Teeth Whitening Procedure

Welcome to the Teeth Whitening Training Program!

Get ready to embark on a journey into the world of teeth whitening, a simple yet incredibly effective process that can deliver stunning results for your clients.

Understanding the Safety and Risks of Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening treatments are generally safe when carried out following proper procedures. However, as with any cosmetic procedure, there are certain risks associated with teeth whitening that we want to ensure you are well-informed about. We’ll cover these risks thoroughly during your training.

Compliance and Legislation

Operating within the boundaries of legislation and regulations is crucial when providing teeth whitening as a non-dental practitioner. We will equip you with the knowledge you need to navigate the legal aspects and restrictions that pertain to teeth whitening treatments.

Let’s Start with a Demonstration

We believe that learning by seeing is a powerful way to grasp the concepts and techniques of teeth whitening. To kickstart your training, we’ve prepared a demonstration video that provides a step-by-step guide on how to perform a teeth whitening treatment.

1. Consultation and Consent:

  • Start with a consultation with your client before the treatment.
  • Have your client sign the consent form, ensuring they are fully informed.

2. Determine Current Tooth Shade:

  • Use your teeth shade set to identify the current shade of your client’s darkest tooth.
  • Record this shade on the disclaimer form for reference.

3. Client Preparation:

  • Provide your client with their teeth whitening treatment pack.
  • Ask them to wear a bib for protection.
  • Demonstrate the correct use of the cheek retractor with a demonstration model.
  • Show them how to apply the whitening gel to the visible front teeth only, avoiding the gum area, using a demo pen. (IMPORTANT: Never touch your client’s teeth or mouth)

4. Cheek Retractor and Finger Wipe:

  • Instruct your client to insert the cheek retractor themselves.
  • Guide your client to open a finger wipe sachet and rub the front of their teeth with the blue side of the wipe, discarding it afterward.

5. Gel Application:

  • Ask your client to open the gel pen and ensure the brush head is covered with gel.
  • Instruct them to apply the gel to the top teeth, covering each tooth thoroughly, including the spaces between them, while staying close to the gum line.
  • They may need to reload the applicator every few teeth.
  • Repeat the process for the bottom set.

6. Check for Even Coverage:

  • Verify that your client has applied the gel evenly, without missing any areas.

7. Positioning for Whitening:

  • Have your client fully recline.
  • Position the light head approximately 2cm away from their mouth, ensuring it points directly at the exposed teeth without touching.

8. Pain Sensitivity Explanation:

  • Explain to your client that if they experience any sharp pain in their teeth, they should inform you immediately.
  • If such pain occurs, stop the treatment, and instruct the client to rinse thoroughly and brush their teeth without toothpaste.
  • Recommend that they consult their dentist as they may have an underlying dental issue.

9. Protect the Eyes:

  • Provide your client with protective glasses to wear.
  • Turn on the light and set it for a 20-minute session.
  • Allow the client to relax under the lamp, periodically checking to ensure their mouth remains in front of the lamp.

10. Rinse and Brush:

  • Instruct your client to rinse their mouth and lightly brush their teeth without toothpaste or use the finger wipe.
  • Note that the gel remains active for about 20 minutes, so you’ll need a fresh application for the next session.

11. Repeat the Process:

  • Start again from step 3, offering your client a fresh bib for protection.
  • If your client experiences slight gum sensitivity, offer a vitamin E swab.
  • Multiple treatments may be necessary in a single visit for optimal results.

12. Assess the Results:

  • Use the same tooth and a well-lit area to determine your client’s new tooth shade.

13. Aftercare Instructions:

  • Advise your client to avoid consuming staining substances like tea, coffee, red wine, curry, or anything that could stain a white shirt for 24 to 48 hours.
  • Provide them with a copy of the aftercare sheet for reference.

Following these steps ensures a smooth and successful teeth whitening appointment for your client.
