6% Hydrogen Peroxide vs. 18% Carbamide Peroxide

Both are an excellent choice for teeth whitening and will produce brilliant results.  18% carbamide peroxide has about the same strength as 6% hydrogen peroxide so despite the way it sounds there is no difference in strength. Hydrogen peroxide begins breaking down faster and therefore has a faster treatment time and some say better results.  Mostly it comes down to personal preference as some technicians feel 18% Carbamide Peroxide sounds better to their client than 6% Hydrogen Peroxide.

6% hydrogen peroxide treatments are generally done in 2 x 15-20 minute sessions while 18% carbamide peroxide treatments are 2 x 20-25 minute sessions.

Generally speaking at levels of 6%HP and 18%CP tooth sensitivity is rare as long as the teeth and gums are healthy.

Storage and Shelf Life of Peroxide Gels

Peroxide whitening gels should be either refrigerated or stored in a dry, cool area out of direct sunlight. The shelf life of peroxide products stored correctly is approximately 12 months.  We advise purchasing what you expect to use in 3-6 months to maximise the effectiveness of the product.  If you refrigerate your peroxide gels remember to remove them from the fridge at least 1 hour prior to the treatment as cold gels will take longer to become active.
